James Dyson (born 1947) is an inventor, industrial designer, and entrepreneur whose work has reconsidered the functions and structures of everyday products. Born in Norfolk, England, he studied design at the Royal College of Art. Working with inventor Jeremy Fry, whom he met as a student, he helped design, manufacture, and sell the Sea Truck, a high-speed landing craft. In 1974, he established his own venture with the Ballbarrow, a wheelbarrow that replaced a narrow wheel with a ball. He adapted cyclonic separation used in a powder-coating facility to vacuum cleaning and built 5,127 prototypes. After established manufacturers declined his technology, he pursued production himself and launched the DC01 in 1993. His first autobiography, Against the Odds (1997), published in Japanese in 2004, described this development process and the difficulties of bringing an invention to market. It addressed manufacturing, sales, and financing alongside technical experimentation; the 2003 English edition included an updated chapter on subsequent product development. Dyson established the James Dyson Foundation in 2002 to support science and engineering education and opened the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology in 2017, combining degree study with paid engineering work. In Invention: A Life (2021), translated into Japanese in 2022, he revisited his upbringing and the growth of his company while examining education, mentorship, and self-reliance in invention. The book followed developments extending from vacuum cleaners to electric motors and hair-care technologies, as well as his work on electric vehicles, farming, and the education of young engineers.
