ジェームズ・C・スコット（James C. Scott、1936–2024） アメリカの政治学者、人類学者。イェール大学で政治学・人類学の教授を務め、東南アジアの農村社会をフィールドに、国家権力と農民の抵抗、支配される側が日常生活のなかで用いる抵抗の方法などを研究した。国家による統治を中心に歴史を見るのではなく、その支配を避けたり、そこから距離を置いたりしてきた人々に注目した研究で知られる。『反穀物の人類史 国家誕生のディープヒストリー』（原題 "Against the Grain: A Deep History of the Earliest States"）では、農耕と定住が文明と国家を生み出したという従来の歴史像を問い直し、穀物栽培、徴税、労働力の管理などを通して初期国家が成立していく過程を描いた。
James C. Scott (1936–2024) An American political scientist and anthropologist who taught political science and anthropology at Yale University. Drawing extensively on fieldwork in rural Southeast Asia, he studied state power, peasant politics, and the everyday forms of resistance used by people subject to authority. His work is known for examining history not only from the perspective of states and rulers but also through communities that sought to evade or remain beyond their control. In "Against the Grain: A Deep History of the Earliest States," Scott challenges the conventional account that agriculture and settled life naturally led to civilization and the state, tracing instead how grain cultivation, taxation, and the control of labor helped make early states possible.
