Jake Adelstein (born 1969) is an American investigative journalist and nonfiction author best known for his reporting on organized crime in Japan. After moving to Japan in 1988 to study Japanese literature at Sophia University, he became the first non-Japanese staff reporter at Yomiuri Shimbun in 1993. Over the course of his career, he has investigated the yakuza, human trafficking, corruption, financial crime, and other issues related to Japan's criminal underworld. Following his departure from the newspaper, he worked on a U.S. State Department-sponsored study of human trafficking and has written for publications including The Daily Beast, The Japan Times, and the Los Angeles Times. Widely recognized for his investigative reporting and insider knowledge of Japan's underworld, Adelstein is also known for Tokyo Vice, his memoir of crime reporting in Japan, which inspired the television series of the same name. Some aspects of the memoir have been publicly disputed, and Adelstein has defended his account by releasing supporting source materials, making the work the subject of ongoing debate as well as acclaim.
