J. Anthony Lukas was a journalist whose sustained reporting investigated American social divisions through individual lives. A former domestic and foreign correspondent for The New York Times, he wrote about conflicts of generation, race and class. Common Ground followed three Boston families through school desegregation, connecting housing, education and local politics with family history. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award and Pulitzer Prize. Big Trouble investigated the murder of a former Idaho governor and the ensuing trial, tracing relationships among labor, business, politics and journalism at the beginning of the twentieth century. Lukas completed it shortly before his death in 1997. Prizes bearing his name were subsequently established to support reported nonfiction.
