JS Tan is a researcher and writer who studies labor activism in the technology industry. A former Microsoft employee, he is pursuing a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his research examines the organization of professional tech workers and the process through which workplace social activism develops into labor action. His work has been featured in The New York Times and MIT Technology Review, and his writing has appeared in Dissent, Jacobin, Foreign Policy, The Baffler, and The Guardian. Co-authored with Clarissa Redwine, “Against Tech Oligarchy: Worker Resistance in the World’s Most Powerful Industry” traces protests against military contracts and workplace sexism, the rise of union organizing, and the dismissals and stricter labor practices that followed.
