ジョージ・ソーンダーズ（1958年–）は、アメリカの小説家、短編作家。テキサス州に生まれ、コロラド鉱山大学で地球物理工学を学んだのち、シラキュース大学で創作を学んだ。企業社会や消費文化のなかで追い詰められる人々を、風刺、ブラックユーモア、幻想的な設定を交えて描く。短編集『十二月の十日』（Tenth of December）や『短くて恐ろしいフィルの時代』（The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil）などで知られ、リンカーン大統領と亡き息子をめぐる初長編『リンカーンとさまよえる霊魂たち』（Lincoln in the Bardo）で2017年ブッカー賞を受賞した。2025年には全米図書財団の米文学功労賞を受賞し、2026年には死を迎える石油王と彼を導く霊を描いた長編『Vigil』（未邦訳）を刊行した。
George Saunders (1958–) is an American novelist and short-story writer. Born in Texas, he studied geophysical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines before earning a degree in creative writing from Syracuse University. Combining satire, black humor, and fantastic settings, he often portrays people trapped within corporate systems and consumer culture. He is known for such works as “Tenth of December” and “The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil.” His first novel, “Lincoln in the Bardo,” which centers on President Abraham Lincoln and his deceased son, won the 2017 Booker Prize. Saunders received the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2025 and published “Vigil,” a novel about a dying oil tycoon and the spirit assigned to guide him, in 2026.
