George Dangerfield (1904–1986) was a journalist and historian whose work examined modern British politics and society and the political development of the early United States. Born in Newbury, England, he graduated from Hertford College, Oxford, in 1927 and moved to the United States in 1930. After working in publishing, he served as literary editor of Vanity Fair from 1933 to 1935. His “The Strange Death of Liberal England” (1935) traced the crisis of Liberal politics before the First World War through the intertwined conflicts over the House of Lords, Irish Home Rule, women’s suffrage, and organized labour. Rather than treating the war as the sudden origin of a transformed society, he located important changes in the political and social confrontations that preceded it. During the Second World War he served with the U.S. Army’s 102nd Infantry Division, becoming an American citizen in 1943. His postwar historical work also addressed the early American republic. “The Era of Good Feelings” (1952) examined the period of Monroe and John Quincy Adams and the emergence of Jacksonian politics after the War of 1812. It explored national growth and nationalism alongside the conflicts beneath the reassuring name given to the period. The book received both the Pulitzer Prize for History and the Bancroft Prize in 1953. Dangerfield subsequently lectured in history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1968 to 1972.
