Geoffrey Cain is an American investigative journalist and technology writer whose reporting examines companies, technology, and political power, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. He earned a bachelor’s degree at George Washington University and a master’s degree at SOAS, University of London, and was a Fulbright scholar. His work has appeared in The Economist, Time, and The Wall Street Journal. Reporting from South Korea formed the basis of “Samsung Rising,” which follows Samsung’s emergence as a global technology company through the influence of its founding family, its political relationships, and its competition with Apple. The book was longlisted for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award in 2020. In “The Perfect Police State: An Undercover Odyssey into China’s Terrifying Surveillance Dystopia of the Future,” published in Japanese as “AI Kangoku Uiguru,” he investigated surveillance in Xinjiang through on-the-ground reporting and testimony from people affected by the system. The book examines how facial recognition, data collection, and technology companies became connected with state repression. His investigation of corporate and technological power continued in “Steve Jobs in Exile.” Using unbroadcast footage, internal company documents, and new interviews, he traced Steve Jobs’s work at NeXT during the years between his departure from Apple in 1985 and his return in 1997, examining the setbacks and changes in leadership that marked that period.
