Geoff Ryman is a Canadian-born novelist based in the United Kingdom whose work spans science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. He began publishing in 1976 and established a web design team at the Central Office of Information in 1994, helping lead the creation of the first official websites for the monarchy and 10 Downing Street. He explores how technological and social change affect everyday lives, often focusing on people negotiating boundaries of sexuality, culture, and belonging. In “Air: Or, Have Not Have,” a communications technology that connects human minds directly to a global network reaches a rural Asian village. Mae, a woman who supplies local residents with clothing and cosmetics, survives a disastrous test and attempts to prepare her community for its arrival. The novel examines the opportunities and disruptions of connectivity through women’s work and village relationships, and won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2006. In “Was,” Ryman intertwines the stories of a nineteenth-century Kansas girl named Dorothy, Judy Garland, and an actor living with AIDS, linking their lives through “The Wizard of Oz.” Across these narratives, he considers how imaginative worlds can offer refuge to people whose experiences of loss, exclusion, and suffering resist a comforting resolution.
