Cynthia Barnett is an American environmental journalist whose reporting focuses on water resources and climate change around the world. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Geographic, and other publications, and she teaches environmental journalism at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications. In "Rain: A Natural and Cultural History," Barnett combines science with cultural history to trace humanity’s relationship with rain—from ancient civilizations, religion, and literature to weather forecasting, cloud seeding, drought, and modern efforts to manage water. The book shows how rainfall has sustained societies while its abundance and absence have shaped migration, conflict, and environmental change. It was longlisted for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction and named a finalist for the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award.
