Charlotte Higgins is a British journalist and chief culture writer for The Guardian. Born in Stoke-on-Trent, she studied Classics at Balliol College, Oxford. Alongside her reporting on art, literature, and music, her books explore how ancient stories and material remains shape later cultures and interpretations of history. “Under Another Sky: Journeys in Roman Britain” follows her travels through Roman sites in Britain, examining both their history and the meanings later generations have attached to them. It was shortlisted for the 2013 Samuel Johnson Prize, now the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Published in 2026, “Ukrainian Lessons: Art in a Time of War” draws on three years of reporting visits following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The book was longlisted for the 2026 Baillie Gifford Prize. Through encounters with writers and artists, informed by her background in classical literature, Higgins examines how people give artistic expression to violence and loss, and what they risk to preserve culture during war.
