Rintaro (born 1941) is a Japanese animation director and manga artist whose birth name is Shigeyuki Hayashi. He began his career at Toei Doga, contributing to “The White Snake Enchantress,” Japan’s first color feature-length animated film, before joining Mushi Production and directing episodes of “Astro Boy” and “Kimba the White Lion.” As an independent director, he went on to make such landmark works as “Space Pirate Captain Harlock,” “Galaxy Express 999,” “Harmagedon,” and “Metropolis,” developing a cinematic visual style distinguished by dramatic compositions and expressive contrasts of light and shadow. His autobiographical graphic novel “Ma vie en 24 images par seconde,” published in Japanese as “1 Byō 24 Koma no Boku no Jinsei,” recounts his childhood fascination with cinema and his work alongside figures including Osamu Tezuka and Leiji Matsumoto; it received the 29th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize’s Manga Grand Prize.
