Richard Dooling (born 1954) is an American novelist, screenwriter, and lawyer. Before practicing law, he worked as a respiratory therapist in intensive care units and traveled through West Africa; both experiences shaped his fiction. His debut novel, Critical Care, uses dark humor to examine a dispute over life-sustaining treatment and the pressures of hospital work. Sidney Lumet later directed its film adaptation. Dooling’s second novel, White Man’s Grave, drew on his time in Africa and became a finalist for the 1994 National Book Award. In Brain Storm, he again brings professional knowledge into fiction, exploring questions where law and science meet. He has also written for television, including Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital.
