R. W. B. Lewis was a literary critic and biographer who taught English and American studies at Yale. The American Adam investigated American literature through the ideal of a new individual released from inherited history. Edith Wharton drew on newly available letters and archival material to connect the novelist's emotional life, relationships and social setting with her writing. It won the Pulitzer Prize, Bancroft Prize and the first National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. Dante: A Life brought limited biographical evidence into conversation with the poet's work, examining the significance of Florence and exile. Lewis's scholarship connected literary interpretation with the historical circumstances of individual lives. He died in 2002.
