リディア・デイヴィス（Lydia Davis、1947年–）は、アメリカの短編作家、小説家、エッセイスト、翻訳家。一文だけの作品から比較的長い物語まで、従来の短編小説の枠に収まらない簡潔で実験的な作品を発表してきた。邦訳には短編集『ほとんど記憶のない女』（Almost No Memory）、『サミュエル・ジョンソンが怒っている』（Samuel Johnson Is Indignant）、長編『話の終わり』（The End of the Story）などがある。フランス文学の翻訳家としても、プルースト『失われた時を求めて』第1篇やフローベール『ボヴァリー夫人』の英訳を手がけ、2003年にマッカーサー・フェロー、2013年にマン・ブッカー国際賞に選ばれた。日常の会話や不満、記憶、家族関係を素材に、言葉と意識が働く過程そのものを短い形式のなかに描いている。
Lydia Davis (1947–) is an American short-story writer, novelist, essayist, and translator. Her fiction ranges from single-sentence pieces to longer narratives and frequently challenges conventional distinctions among stories, essays, observations, and anecdotes. Her books include “Almost No Memory,” “Samuel Johnson Is Indignant,” and the novel “The End of the Story.” As a translator of French literature, she has produced English versions of the first volume of Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” and Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary”; she received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2003 and the Man Booker International Prize in 2013. Drawing on ordinary conversations, irritation, memory, and family relationships, Davis uses compressed forms to examine how language and consciousness operate.
