Lily King (born 1963) is an American novelist who grew up in Massachusetts. She earned a BA in English literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MA in creative writing at Syracuse University. She taught English and creative writing at schools and universities in the United States and abroad, published her first novel in 1999, and received a Whiting Award in 2000. In Euphoria (2014), she drew on the fieldwork of Margaret Mead and other anthropologists to imagine three researchers working in New Guinea in the 1930s. Intellectual collaboration and rivalry intersect with romantic attachment; the novel won the Kirkus Prize for Fiction and the New England Book Award and was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. Writers & Lovers (2020) turns to the material conditions of a writing life. Set in Boston in 1997, it follows Casey, an aspiring novelist coping with her mother’s death, a failed relationship, and debt while working in a restaurant and trying to finish her book. The story connects grief and romance with the time, work, and private space that writing requires. King’s sixth novel, Heart the Lover (2025), begins with a woman’s friendship and romantic entanglements with Sam and Yash, two fellow students in a college literature class. It follows the consequences of youthful choices across decades, as relationships formed through books and intellectual exchange are reshaped by family life, time, and loss. The novel was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
