René Steinke is an American novelist and essayist. After graduating from Valparaiso University, she earned an MFA from the University of Virginia and a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and has worked in literary editing and creative-writing education. “Holy Skirts,” based on the life of Dada artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, was a finalist for the National Book Award. Set in a Texas town, “Friendswood” examines how toxic contamination and violence against a young woman affect several families and the wider community. From reconstructing the life of a historical woman artist to portraying a contemporary environmental crisis, her fiction explores female self-determination, religion, family, communal concealment, and responsibility.
