Rebecca Lemov is a professor of the history of science at Harvard University. She earned a PhD in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and studies the ways data and technology have shaped conceptions of human nature and the behavioral sciences. In “The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-Persuasion,” she traces attempts to influence the mind from the treatment of prisoners during the Korean War, cults, and military and intelligence experiments to social-media doomscrolling and AI-driven behavior shaping, examining how emotional manipulation can alter judgment and perceptions of reality.
