Ray Celestin is a British novelist and screenwriter based in London. His City Blues Quartet traces the intertwined histories of jazz and organized crime in twentieth-century America. The series begins with “The Axeman’s Jazz,” a historical crime novel inspired by the unsolved serial murders that terrorized New Orleans in 1919. A killer threatens to murder anyone who is not listening to jazz, while three investigators pursue the case from different positions: a police detective concealing his marriage to a Black woman, a former detective working for the Mafia, and an aspiring female investigator accompanied by the young Louis Armstrong. The novel won the Crime Writers’ Association’s John Creasey New Blood Dagger for best debut crime novel in 2014. By bringing these investigations together, Celestin depicts a city where music crosses social boundaries, while racism, police corruption and criminal interests shape who can uncover the truth.
