Leor Zmigrod is a political psychologist and neuroscientist whose research examines the relationships between ideological commitment, radicalization, cognition, emotion and the brain. She studied psychology at the University of Cambridge and completed her doctorate as a Gates Scholar. She subsequently held a Junior Research Fellowship at Churchill College, Cambridge, and visiting fellowships at Stanford University, Harvard University, the Paris Institute for Advanced Study and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. Combining experimental psychology, cognitive science, political science and neuroscience, she investigated not only the content of political beliefs but also the form of thinking through which people hold and revise them. Her work used perceptual and problem-solving tasks to examine cognitive flexibility and rigidity and their associations with dogmatism and extreme attitudes. In 2020, she received the European Society for Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience’s Young Investigator Award. Her first book, The Ideological Brain, published in Japanese as イデオロギーに飲まれる脳――硬直的思考の脳科学, brought this research into an account of how strongly held beliefs develop through the interaction of individual cognitive characteristics and social environments. It examined relationships between ideology and the brain alongside stress, deprivation, social exclusion, emotion, learning and development. Rather than treating ideological commitment as a simple expression of one biological trait, the book explored the processes through which beliefs are formed, reinforced and changed.
