Lea Ypi is an Albanian-born political philosopher and writer whose research addresses freedom, democracy, justice and migration. She studied philosophy and literature at Sapienza University of Rome, completed a doctorate at the European University Institute, and held a research fellowship at Nuffield College, Oxford. At the London School of Economics, her teaching and research encompass Kant, Marxism and critical theory. Her philosophical memoir Free: Coming of Age at the End of History (2021) follows her childhood in socialist Albania and the disruption of the world she knew during the transition of the 1990s. Family secrets and political change provide the setting for an inquiry into what freedom means under different social systems. The book won the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize and the Slightly Foxed First Biography Prize in 2022. Fumi Yamada’s Japanese translation appeared in 2025. Indignity: A Life Reimagined (2025) turns to an earlier generation, beginning with a photograph of her grandmother Leman on her honeymoon in 1941. Moving from the collapse of the Ottoman Empire to the establishment of communism in the Balkans, Ypi combines secret-police reports, court records and personal memories with literary reconstruction. She examined the gaps between archival evidence and family recollection, and the difficulty of judging human dignity across generations.
