Lady Hale, whose name is Brenda Hale, is a British legal scholar and lawyer specializing in family and social welfare law. Born in Yorkshire, she studied law at Girton College, Cambridge. She taught at Manchester University from 1966 to 1984, qualifying as a barrister and also practising for a time. In 1984 she became the first woman appointed to the Law Commission. Her team’s work contributed to legislation including the Children Act 1989 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. She became a High Court judge in 1994 and the first woman Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 2004. She joined the Supreme Court at its creation in 2009 and served as its first woman President from 2017 until 2020. Alongside specialist legal writing, she has written for general readers about the work of the justice system. Her memoir Spider Woman (2021) recounts a career in a male-dominated profession and examines how the experiences of women, children and disadvantaged people inform legal decisions. For With the Law on Our Side (2025), she visited courts and tribunals and used real cases to explain everyday disputes and difficult conflicts of rights. Moving from the facts of a case to questions for readers and the court’s response, it explores judging, lawmaking and the importance of access to justice. The book was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction in 2026. In Do We Have the Right to Die? (2026), coauthored with Rowan Williams, she argues for freedom to choose the timing and manner of one’s death while examining legal safeguards. Williams presents an opposing position, bringing competing views on assisted dying, autonomy and collective responsibility into the same volume.
