Ramona Emerson is an American novelist and filmmaker. A Diné writer originally from Tohatchi, New Mexico, she earned a bachelor’s degree in media arts from the University of New Mexico and an MFA in creative writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her professional experience in forensic videography led to work as a photographer, writer, and editor. Her debut novel, “Shutter,” follows Rita Todacheene, an Albuquerque police forensic photographer who can see the ghosts of crime victims, combining a criminal investigation with Diné spiritual traditions. The novel was longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award for Fiction and was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Its sequel, “Exposure,” continues Rita’s story while examining how the deaths of Indigenous people can be overlooked and the psychological burden carried by those who document them. An Emmy Award nominee, Emerson also runs the production company Reel Indian Pictures with her husband.
