ララ・ヴァプニャール（Lara Vapnyar）は、ロシア出身のアメリカの小説家。モスクワで育ち、1994年にアメリカへ移住したのち、英語で短編小説を書き始め、『ニューヨーカー』や『ハーパーズ』などに作品を発表してきた。グッゲンハイム・フェローシップ、Goldberg Prize for Jewish Fictionを受賞。代表作『Divide Me by Zero』（未邦訳）は、数学者だった母の死をきっかけに、主人公カーチャがソ連時代の少女期からアメリカへの移住、結婚と離婚、恋愛、母との関係を振り返る物語で、母が遺した数学のメモを織り込みながら、移民としての人生と家族の記憶、愛と喪失を描いている。
Lara Vapnyar is a Russian-born American novelist. Raised in Moscow, she immigrated to the United States in 1994 and began writing fiction in English, publishing stories and essays in The New Yorker, Harper’s, and other publications. She is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Goldberg Prize for Jewish Fiction. Her novel "Divide Me by Zero" follows Katya as the death of her mathematician mother prompts her to look back on her childhood in the Soviet Union, immigration to the United States, marriage and divorce, love affairs, and her complicated relationship with her mother. Interwoven with mathematical notes left behind by her mother, the novel traces a life shaped by migration, family memory, love, and loss.
