Akiko Otake (1950–) is a Japanese writer and photography critic. She began taking photographs and writing while living in New York around 1980 and has since worked across photography criticism, reportage, essays, and fiction. Since 2007, she has organized Katarikoko, a series of public conversations and readings, and has published writing arising from these encounters through her independent Katarikoko Bunko imprint. In “Shashin ga Atte Yokatta: Moriyama Daido Den,” she draws on years of research and interviews to trace photographer Daido Moriyama’s creative development and periods of crisis within the broader history of postwar Japanese photography.
