Shinobu Onizawa (born 1963) is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction spanning political philosophy, economics, history, science, and psychology. He graduated from the Department of Business Administration in Seijo University’s Faculty of Economics and completed a master’s program in cultural science at Saitama University. His translations range from studies of institutions and economic systems to research on human behavior and emotion. He translated Michael Sandel’s “Justice,” published in Japanese as “Kore kara no Seigi no Hanashi o Shiyo,” which introduces political philosophy through social controversies and ethical dilemmas. Its discussions consider maximizing happiness, individual freedom, community, and competing understandings of a good life. With Michio Shiohara, he co-translated Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson’s “Power and Progress,” published as “Gijutsu Kakushin to Fubyodo no Sennen-shi.” Moving from watermills and the Industrial Revolution to digital technology, it investigated how power and institutions shape the distribution of wealth created by technological change. In 2026 he translated Ethan Kross’s “Shift,” released in Japanese as “Mood Shift.” Drawing on psychological research and concrete examples, the book distinguished emotion regulation from simply suppressing feelings. It examined sensory experiences such as music, shifts in attention and perspective, physical surroundings, relationships, and culture, and considered how understanding these influences could be translated into everyday action.
