Kenjiro Okazaki (1955–) A Japanese visual artist and critic whose work crosses the boundaries of painting, sculpture, architecture, landscape design, performing arts, and criticism. Since being invited to the Paris Biennale in 1982, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad. In 2002, he served as director of the Japan Pavilion at the 8th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, and he has also been active in arts education, founding Yotsuya Art Studium. In "Chusho no Chikara: Kindai Geijutsu no Kaiseki," he reexamines modern art since Cubism through artists including Hilma af Klint, Morikazu Kumagai, Giorgio Morandi, Ryusei Kishida, and Isamu Noguchi, exploring how abstraction opened new possibilities for artistic thought and form in twentieth-century art. The book received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize for Criticism.
