Yoko Ogawa (born 1962) is a Japanese novelist from Okayama Prefecture. After graduating from the School of Letters at Waseda University, she made her literary debut in 1988 when “Agehachō ga Kowareru Toki” received the Kaien Prize for New Writers. Her fiction explores memory, loss, bodily change, and lives conducted in enclosed spaces, using quiet, precise prose to show moments when anxiety or cruelty enters seemingly ordinary routines. She received the Akutagawa Prize for "Pregnancy Diary" and the Tanizaki Junichiro Prize for "Mīna no Kōshin," and many of her works have been translated internationally. Her representative novel, published in English as "The Housekeeper and the Professor," received the Yomiuri Prize for Literature and Japan’s inaugural Booksellers’ Award; it follows a mathematician whose new memories last only eighty minutes, his housekeeper, and her ten-year-old son as they form a relationship through conversations about prime numbers, amicable numbers, and baseball.
