Shohei Okubo (born 1990) is an economic historian specializing in global economic history, the Dutch East India Company, and maritime Asia. Born in Saitama Prefecture, he studied Western history at Keio University before pursuing Asian history at the University of Tokyo, where he received his doctorate in literature in 2024. After serving as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science research fellow and working in the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, he joined Ryukoku University’s Faculty of Economics in 2024. His research follows commodities such as opium, sugar, coffee, pepper, and porcelain, examining their production, distribution, consumption, and the people involved. He places Asian maritime trade from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries within the connected histories of economic globalization and local social change, incorporating historical geographic information systems (HGIS). His Japanese-language monograph “Ahen no Kinsei: Oranda Higashi Indo Gaisha to Kaiiki Ajia” (2026) examined opium before the Opium War, linking South Asian production to Southeast Asian markets. It investigated the Dutch East India Company’s trading monopoly alongside merchant activity and smuggling networks. Following consumption in Batavia and other communities, debates about public order, restrictions on use, and the development of revenue farming, the book analyzed opium’s commodity chains in relation to changing colonial governance.
