Shigeru Ohki (born 1947) is a Japanese photographer whose work encompasses railways, travel, magazine and book photography, and film stills. Born in Setagaya, Tokyo, he graduated from Waseda University’s School of Science and Engineering in 1972. A self-taught photographer, he travelled throughout Japan to photograph steam locomotives during his high school and university years. Encounters with unfamiliar places and people led him to make photography his profession. He worked for general interest weeklies and monthlies as well as railway, motoring, and travel publications, and began taking film stills in his late thirties. His photographic collection “Kikansha: Yomigaeru Tetsuro no Kioku 1963–72” brought together steam locomotives and railway landscapes he had photographed as a student. In “Burari Eurasia,” he documented a solo journey undertaken at seventy-two, crossing seventeen countries and roughly twenty thousand kilometres in about three months. Around a thousand photographs and accompanying text recorded local food, daily life, and the people he encountered alongside the trains. For “Discovered Japan,” he returned to earlier photographic locations between 2016 and 2025, pairing old and new views along railway lines from Hokkaido to Kagoshima to document changes in landscapes and society over half a century.
