オー・ヘンリー（O. Henry、1862–1910年）は、アメリカの短編小説家。本名ウィリアム・シドニー・ポーター。ノースカロライナ州生まれ。叔母が営む学校などで学び、薬局や銀行での仕事を経て執筆活動に入った。ニューヨークに暮らす庶民の喜びや悲哀を、ユーモアと意外な結末を交えて描いた。代表作『賢者の贈り物』（原題 “The Gift of the Magi”）は、貧しい若夫婦が互いへのクリスマスプレゼントを買うため、それぞれ大切なものを手放す物語。『最後の一葉』（原題 “The Last Leaf”）では、病床から見えるツタの葉に自分の命を重ねる若い画家と、彼女を救おうとする老画家の行動を描いている。

O. Henry (1862–1910) was an American short story writer whose real name was William Sydney Porter. Born in North Carolina, he attended his aunt’s school and worked in a drugstore and a bank before pursuing a literary career. His stories portray the pleasures and hardships of ordinary people, particularly in New York City, combining humor with unexpected endings. In “The Gift of the Magi,” a young couple with little money each sacrifices a treasured possession to buy the other a Christmas present. “The Last Leaf” follows a young artist who believes she will die when the last ivy leaf outside her window falls, and an elderly painter who acts to restore her hope.
