Atsuko Otsuka (1960–) is a Japanese photojournalist and writer of nonfiction and photographic books for children. After graduating from Sophia University, she began working in photojournalism in 1986 and covered conflicts including the Palestinian intifada and the Gulf War. She later expanded her work to document people confronting illness and death, relationships between humans and animals, and programs that support rehabilitation after crime or delinquency. Her photographic book “Sayonara Eruma Obasan,” which records Elma and her family during the final stage of her life with cancer, received both the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award for Picture Books and the Shogakukan Children’s Publication Culture Award.
