Ota Kenji (born 1971) is a Japanese sociologist from Yamaguchi Prefecture and a professor in the Faculty of Sociology at Konan Women’s University. He completed his doctoral studies at Osaka University and holds a doctorate in human sciences. Specializing in the sociology of music and cultural studies, he researches club culture, popular music, DJs, live-music venues, media, and the nighttime economy. Drawing partly on his own experience as a DJ, he examines how spaces devoted to music and dance interact with regulation, urban life, consumption, and communication. In “Club Culture no Shakaigaku: Kakusan shi Kosasuru Shiko no Bunka, 1945–2020” (The Sociology of Club Culture), he traces the development of clubs overseas and in Japan, the disco boom, restrictions imposed under Japan’s entertainment-business law, the spread of club culture into festivals and popular media, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also coedited “Hyogen Bunka no Shakaigaku Nyumon” (Introduction to the Sociology of Expressive Culture) and “Hyogen Bunkaron Kogi” (Lectures on Expressive Culture).
