Akiko Osawa is a Japanese translator whose nonfiction includes natural history and accounts of individual lives. She graduated from Osaka University’s School of Human Sciences and began studying translation while working in an administrative job. After moving to Tokyo, she took part in workshops under professional translators and developed a career in publishing. She translated Patrik Svensson’s “The Book of Eels,” which combines the scientific history of an elusive animal with memories of a father and son. In Jonathan C. Slaght’s “Owls of the Eastern Ice,” Osawa translated an account of field research on Blakiston’s fish owl in the Russian Far East and the practical challenges of conserving its habitat. She also translated Henry Oster and Dexter Ford’s “The Stable Boy of Auschwitz,” a memoir tracing a German-born Jewish boy’s imprisonment and survival during the Holocaust.
