Masako Onuki (born 1932) is a Japanese translator of science books, including physics, biology, and scientific biography. From the 1980s onward, she translated Richard P. Feynman’s recollections and writings about science. Her translation of “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!,” published in Japanese as “Gojodan Desho, Feynman-san,” presented the autobiography of a scientist whose curiosity extended beyond physics to activities including playing music and opening safes. Moving from his childhood through university research and his work at Los Alamos, the book used personal anecdotes to explore habits of observation and testing ideas for oneself. The translation entered the Iwanami Gendai Bunko series in 2000, and a version reset in more readable type appeared in 2025. She also translated James Gleick’s “Chaos: Making a New Science,” issued in Shincho Bunko in 1991. It traced the emergence of a science of nonlinear phenomena through research in areas including weather, fluids, and biology. With Shunichi Makino, she translated Edward O. Wilson’s “The Diversity of Life.” The Japanese translation appeared in 1995 and was reissued in Iwanami Gendai Bunko in 2004. Her work on this book covered Wilson’s account of how species arise through evolution, how life recovers from mass extinctions, and how human activity threatens biodiversity, together with his proposals for conservation.
