小野木 明恵（おのき あきえ）は、歴史、科学、社会心理学などのノンフィクションを手がける翻訳家。大阪外国語大学英語学科を卒業した。ライザ・マンディの『コード・ガールズ』（原題 “Code Girls”）では、第二次世界大戦中、米国で日本やドイツの暗号解読に従事した女性たちの活動を追う歴史ノンフィクションを翻訳した。ジェイソン・ファゴンの『コードブレイカー』（原題 “The Woman Who Smashed Codes”）では、暗号解読者エリザベス・フリードマンの生涯をたどり、禁酒法時代の密輸組織や戦時下の諜報活動との関わりを描く評伝を訳した。さらに、マンディの『ザ・シスターフッド』（原題 “The Sisterhood: The Secret History of Women at the CIA”）を担当。第二次世界大戦期のOSSから冷戦、2001年の同時多発テロ後まで、情報機関を支えてきた女性たちの仕事を証言から描く書籍の日本語版を手がけた。訳者あとがきでは、2024年のペーパーバック版を最終的な底本とし、その追加のあとがきも訳出した経緯を記した。
Akie Onoki is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on history, science, and social psychology. She graduated from the English Department of Osaka University of Foreign Studies. Her translation of Liza Mundy’s “Code Girls” follows the American women who worked to decipher Japanese and German communications during the Second World War. In Jason Fagone’s “The Woman Who Smashed Codes,” she translated a biography of Elizebeth Friedman, tracing the codebreaker’s involvement in investigations of Prohibition-era smuggling and wartime espionage. Onoki also translated Mundy’s “The Sisterhood: The Secret History of Women at the CIA.” Drawing on interviews, it follows women’s intelligence work from the wartime OSS through the Cold War and the period after September 11, 2001. In her translator’s afterword, Onoki explained that she ultimately used the revised 2024 paperback edition and translated its additional afterword.
