Shiro Onodera (born 1977) is a Japanese historian specializing in modern and contemporary Chinese history. Born in Iwate Prefecture, he graduated from Tohoku University and received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. After serving at Kyoto University's Center for Modern and Contemporary China Studies and Saitama University, he is currently Professor at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies. His research examines nationalism, statism, militarism, and national symbols such as flags and anthems, exploring the formation of the state and national identity in modern China. In "Chugoku Nashonarizumu: Minzoku to Aikoku no Kingendaishi," he traces Chinese nationalism from the late Qing period to the present, examining how ideas of the Chinese nation and patriotism developed through revolution, war, and political change and became intertwined with national integration and China's perceptions of the outside world.
