Tomoko Omachi is a Japanese translator of English-language books on philosophy, history, economics, and personal development. She graduated in English literature from Ochanomizu University. After studying translation and winning prizes in translation competitions, she spent several years preparing reading reports and draft translations before entering book translation. Seeking further opportunities, she entered Trannet’s translation auditions and succeeded on her fifth attempt, receiving the assignment to translate Tom Butler-Bowdon’s “50 Philosophy Classics.” While working on its account of philosophical ideas, she consulted introductory studies and considered readers encountering philosophy for the first time. Her subsequent work extended beyond books on thought to illustrated accounts of history and culture. In 2026 she translated Mel Robbins and Sawyer Robbins’s “The Let Them Theory,” which discusses relinquishing efforts to control other people’s behaviour and judgments while choosing one’s own actions. That year she also translated James Cheshire’s “The Library of Lost Maps” into Japanese as “Shirarezaru Chizu kara Yomitoku Sekai no Rekishi.” Drawing on maps preserved at University College London, the book examines exploration, science, warfare, propaganda, and environmental issues.
