Toshiko Ogawa (born 1958) is a Japanese translator of English-language fiction and nonfiction, particularly works on economics and management. Born in Tokyo, she graduated from the English literature department in Keio University’s Faculty of Letters. In 1994 she translated Winston Groom’s Forrest Gump, a novel following an innocent-minded protagonist through a succession of adventures. The Japanese edition ranked fourth overall and second in the fiction category in Tohan’s annual bestseller lists for 1995. Alongside literary translation, her work has encompassed evolution, human behaviour, business management, service, and communication, extending into nonfiction that examines societies and organisations. With Junko Kawakami, she translated Jared Diamond’s Upheaval: Turning Points for Nations in Crisis, published in Japanese as Kiki to Jinrui in 2019. The book applies insights from personal crises to the histories of nations, examining cases including Finland, Japan, Chile, and Germany. It considers how societies recognise a crisis and decide which features of national life to change and which to retain. The 2020 Japanese paperback edition added an essay on the global crisis caused by COVID-19. In Andrew McAfee’s The Geek Way, published in her translation as Giiku Shiko: Attoteki na Kekka o Dasu Katayaburi na Shikoho in 2025, she translated an account of corporate growth that looks beyond technology to organisational culture. Organised around the four norms of science, ownership, speed, and openness, the book examined how experimentation, clear responsibility, rapid learning, and the exchange of opposing views could change the way organisations work.
