Seiki Ogata (born 1959) is a Japanese editor and nonfiction writer from Hyogo Prefecture. After graduating from Hosei University and working for several magazine editorial departments, he co-founded Tetsujinsha in 1998. He launched the monthly magazine Uramono Japan and served as its editor-in-chief for ten years. Examining the Hakamada case through the life of a judge involved in the original conviction, “Kanzenban: Hakamada Jiken o Sabaita Otoko” follows Norimichi Kumamoto, who drafted Iwao Hakamada’s death sentence despite believing him innocent. The book’s subtitle describes the subsequent decline of the former judge. Ogata traces Kumamoto’s opposition during the judges’ deliberations, his departure from the judiciary, his troubled personal life and his eventual public declaration that the trial had been wrong. Rather than presenting that disclosure simply as an act of courage, he investigates the contradictions surrounding Kumamoto and the burden of responsibility he carried. The expanded 2023 edition adds reporting on events following the 2014 retrial decision and Hakamada’s release. By approaching a wrongful-conviction case through someone who helped deliver the verdict, Ogata examines the relationship between individual conscience, collective decision-making and judicial responsibility.
