Senri Oe (born 1960) is a Japanese jazz pianist, composer, and singer-songwriter. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he graduated from Kwansei Gakuin University’s Faculty of Economics. He made his debut as a singer-songwriter in 1983, releasing songs including “Junin Toiro,” “Kakkowarui Furarekata,” and “Rain.” In 2008, at the age of 47, he moved to New York to study jazz at The New School. After graduating in 2012, he developed a career as a jazz pianist, recording through his own label and working as a performer, composer, and producer. Recounting his return to formal musical study, the Japanese-language memoir “9-banme no Oto o Sagashite: 47-sai kara no New York Jazz Ryugaku” describes the challenges of language, age, and learning an unfamiliar musical vocabulary. Through classes and performances with younger students, Oe examines what it means for an established musician to become a beginner again. Following his transition from student to independent professional, “Brooklyn de Jazz o Tagayasu: 52-sai kara Hajimeru Hitori Business” explores obtaining a green card, establishing a company, and producing and releasing albums, alongside everyday life in New York. Documenting life during the COVID-19 pandemic, “Manhattan ni Hi wa Mata Noboru: 60-sai kara Hajimaru Seishun Graffiti” describes canceled performances, the move to livestreaming, concerns about infection, and relationships with fellow musicians. Together, these books trace the practical work of rebuilding a musical career and finding ways to keep making music as circumstances change.
