Yumiko Odajima is a translator of nonfiction about medicine, psychology, and society. She completed graduate study in law at Meiji University. Her translations range from internet use and addiction to physicians’ accounts of clinical decisions and the limits of treatment. Under the translation supervision of Toshihiko Matsumoto, she translated Carl Erik Fisher’s “The Urge,” combining the author’s personal experience with a long history of alcohol, drugs, and addiction. Henry Marsh’s “And Finally” follows a neurosurgeon who becomes a cancer patient and confronts fear, illness, and mortality. In David Weill’s “Exhale,” she translated an account of lung transplantation that examines decisions about eligibility, care after surgery, and the mixture of achievement and loss within medical practice.
