Fumiaki Obata (born 1984) is a biologist studying how nutrients and gut microbes influence ageing and lifespan. Born in Arakawa, Tokyo, and raised in Koshigaya, Saitama, he completed his doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Tokyo in 2012. After research appointments in Tokyo and London, he established the Laboratory for Nutritional Biology at RIKEN’s Kobe campus in 2021. He received the Young Scientists’ Award in the Commendation for Science and Technology by Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2020. Using fruit flies, his work investigates how nutrient availability and composition, together with gut microbes, affect metabolism, tissue maintenance, reproduction, and healthy lifespan. His laboratory examines nutritional adaptation across development and ageing, and he has also undertaken nutritional research using marmosets. His Japanese-language book “Hara Hachibunme no Seibutsugaku: Kenko Choju no Shoku to wa Nani ka” (2025) traces research from experiments showing that dietary restriction extends lifespan to the identification of genes and amino acids involved in longevity. It examines nutrition beyond calorie intake, intestinal ageing, appetite, and reproduction, while considering the difficulties of applying animal findings to human diets. In “Hae to Tomo ni Oinu: Roka to Jumyo no Seibutsugaku” (2026), he used changes in fruit-fly sleep, movement, and intestinal function to explain the biology of ageing. The book discussed inflammation, nutrient signalling, reproductive trade-offs, and the developmental origins of health and disease, before examining microbial mechanisms of ageing and its evolutionary significance.
