Åsne Seierstad (born 1970) is a Norwegian journalist known for her reporting on life in conflict zones. She studied Russian, Spanish and the history of ideas at the University of Oslo and has reported from Russia, China, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. In “The Bookseller of Kabul,” she draws on her stay with a bookseller’s family after the fall of the Taliban, examining both the patriarch’s determination to preserve books and the restrictions governing the lives of the women in his household. “Never Say War: Life Inside Russia,” longlisted for the 2026 Baillie Gifford Prize, takes the life of a young Wagner Group deserter who fled to Norway as a starting point for an investigation of contemporary Russia. Moving between communities that supply soldiers, young supporters of the regime and independent journalists, Seierstad traces how Putin’s rule and the invasion of Ukraine shape everyday life, personal loyalties and the choices people can make about their futures.
