Satoru Noda is a Japanese manga artist from Kitahiroshima, Hokkaido. He made his debut in 2003 and created the ice-hockey manga “Supinamarada!” before serializing “Golden Kamuy” in “Weekly Young Jump.” The series received the 2016 Manga Taisho, the Manga Grand Prize at the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and the Grand Prize in the comic division of the 51st Japan Cartoonists Association Awards; Noda also received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists. His representative work, “Golden Kamuy,” follows Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi Sugimoto and the young Ainu hunter Asirpa as they decipher a map tattooed across a group of escaped convicts and search for hidden gold in Hokkaido. Their pursuit brings them into conflict with the Seventh Division and rival treasure hunters while weaving hunting, food, northern Indigenous history, wartime trauma, survival, and anarchic comedy into the adventure.
