Norman Mailer (1923–2007) was an American novelist, journalist, essayist, and literary critic. After studying aeronautical engineering at Harvard University, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, an experience that inspired his acclaimed debut novel, The Naked and the Dead. Regarded as one of the most influential American writers of the twentieth century, Mailer blurred the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, writing boldly about war, politics, crime, and American culture. His The Armies of the Night won both the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and the National Book Award, while The Executioner's Song received the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His other notable works include "Miami and the Siege of Chicago," "Harlot's Ghost," and "Ancient Evenings."
