Norman Maclean was a writer and scholar of English literature born in 1902 and raised in western Montana. He taught for many years at the University of Chicago and turned to sustained creative writing after retirement. A River Runs Through It appeared after his seventy-third birthday, connecting fly-fishing with memories of his father, brother and Montana home. Robert Redford adapted the title story for film. Young Men and Fire investigated the 1949 Mann Gulch wildfire and the deaths of firefighters, combining site visits, survivors' accounts and fire science to reconstruct decisions about escape and survival. Published after Maclean's death in 1990, it won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.
