Hoei Nojiri (1885–1977) was a scholar of English literature, essayist, and researcher of star folklore. Born in Yokohama, he graduated from Waseda University’s English literature department, taught English at Kofu and Azabu middle schools, and later joined the publisher Kenkyusha, working on translation and writing. In 1930, he proposed Meiōsei as the Japanese name for the newly discovered Pluto. Alongside writing about constellation myths and literature, he investigated how communities named stars and related them to everyday life. Nihon Seimei Jiten organizes Japanese star names collected through documentary research and reports from collaborators across the country, recording names and traditions associated with farming, mountain, and fishing communities. A Kodansha Gakujutsu Bunko edition appeared in 2026. Before his extensive work as a star essayist, Nojiri published the story collection Mitsuboshi no Koro in 1924. Its eleven nature-themed stories include the title story, in which the light of Orion occupies a boy’s imagination. The collection was reissued in Chikuma Bunko in 2025.
