Nikkei Inc. is a Japanese newspaper company whose newspapers, digital media, and information services focus on the economy, business, and finance. Its origins lie in “Chugai Bukka Shimpo,” a commercial and price-information newspaper founded in 1876. The paper became “Chugai Shogyo Shimpo” in 1889 and “Nihon Sangyo Keizai” during the Second World War; the company and newspaper adopted their present Japanese names in 1946. In 1956 it launched “Watashi no Rirekisho,” an autobiographical series featuring people from a range of professions. It introduced the Nikkei digital edition in 2010 and brought the Financial Times into the group in 2015. Its reporting and editorial work has also formed the basis of books examining industries and regional conditions. The Japanese-language “Nikkei Gyokai Chizu 2027-nenban” mapped 205 industries and 4,950 companies and organisations, combining basic information and market developments with diagrams of corporate partnerships and investment relationships. Edited by its regional reporting centre, “Data de Yomu Chiiki Saisei 3.0” combined data on Japan’s forty-seven prefectures with local reporting to examine initiatives concerning population, employment, education, regional economies, tourism, and public administration. In “Korekara no Nihon no Ronten 2027: Nikkei Daiyosoku,” its journalists analysed twenty-two issues affecting Japan, companies, and the world in the following year, with opening features on US–China relations, AI, and consumption tax, followed by financial markets, employment, industry, and international affairs.
