Nicole Perlroth is an American journalist and cybersecurity investor. A graduate of Princeton University with a master’s degree from Stanford University, she spent roughly a decade covering cybersecurity and digital espionage for The New York Times. Her reporting examined state-sponsored hacking, commercial spyware, and major cyberattacks. She left journalism in 2021 and served on the advisory committee of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). She now leads Silver Buckshot Ventures and serves as a venture partner at Ballistic Ventures, supporting cybersecurity companies. Investigating the market for previously unknown software vulnerabilities and the international cyberarms race, “This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends: The Cyberweapons Arms Race,” published in Japanese in two volumes as “Cyber Senso: Shumatsu no Scenario,” draws on years of reporting and hundreds of interviews. It follows hackers, brokers, and government agencies to explain how vulnerabilities and attack capabilities are traded. The book examines how stockpiling vulnerabilities for offensive use instead of fixing them can undermine the security of businesses and critical infrastructure, exposing financial services, healthcare, and electricity networks to attack. It won the 2021 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award. Through detailed reporting, Perlroth connects weaknesses in the technologies supporting everyday life with the strategic and commercial interests of those seeking to exploit them.
